Becoming A Morning Person & Never Looking Back

People like to talk about the idea of “hitting the ground running.” You’ve surely heard of this concept – you’ll get a lot more done if you get a quick start. It turns out the actual reality of hitting the ground running is disappointingly unhelpful. However, the thought behind it makes sense – if you can give yourself a head start in the morning, then you’ll have momentum throughout the day.

It is that kind of momentum we need to aim for when we first get out of bed. If we can start our motor running in the first hour after waking up, then the whole day becomes easier. It’s hard to be a morning person – they always seem so annoying when you’re not one – but even just thinking “today’s going to be different” can help. It may mean forcing yourself to think and work differently, but it’s worth it.

First Step: Wake Up With A Smile


Are you one of those people who wakes up and lies there for a while? Hoping that you’ll hear on the news that a rogue solar event has wiped out the road system and you don’t need to go to work? Okay, so most people will answer yes to the first, no to the second. But it can be hard to warm up in the morning.

What some people don’t know is that smiling – forcing it, if you have to – releases endorphins. If you can force a smile for a few minutes, you will actually feel better. You’ll feel better yet if you can remember a joke or a happy memory to trigger the smile, but beggars can’t be choosers.

Second Step: Brush Your Teeth

-Remember you only need a pea-sized amount of toothpaste! 🙂

To make yourself more enthusiastic and get the day going forward, it is smart to wash your face and brush your teeth as soon as possible. The splashing of water on your face and the scrub of the facecloth get blood flowing. Brushing your teeth makes everything feel fresher, even if you are just about to go downstairs and drink coffee. And floss, too. Your mouth will thank you. As the saying says, “Only floss the teeth you wish to keep.” Using a good water flosser – you can check out some options with reviews at – will make a big difference. 

Third Step: Be Annoyingly Cheerful


This one works particularly well if you aren’t someone who is naturally cheerful. Just singing in the shower or talking in a positive way can jerk your mindset into the more optimistic lane. As long as you’re not singing Radiohead’s greatest hits, of course. You may love them, but they are not morning-time fight music. Something upbeat will work better. An upside to being annoyingly cheerful is other people’s reactions – that alone will make you laugh.

Sometimes you’re going to wake up and not be your best self. It’s the case for a lot of us. You might need to fake it until you feel it, but this makes it more natural in future. And once you’ve got that under control, no-one can stop you. If only all the morning people got together to take over the world, the night-owls wouldn’t know what hit them.

Prep your fruit and veg properly

Check which fruits and vegetables need pre-juicing preparation. The green leaves of carrots are toxic so should be removed before juicing. Apple seeds contain cyanide, so are best removed. Kiwi skins can create an unpleasant texture, and lemon skin can leave a bitter taste in your juice. Orange skin contains poisonous substances, so is best peeled off. Always wash your fruit and veg before juicing to remove any pesticides or dirt.

Get Up With Enthusiasm


When we get up each day with enthusiasm, we not only send a message to our brains but the world. If we struggle to get up every day, or resist it for as long as possible, we get into bad habits. We tell ourselves we don’t want to get up. Life isn’t good enough, not exciting enough. We want to change that feeling! By making a habit of getting up each day raring to start your day, whether you have much to do or whether it’s full of mundane tasks, you’ll get into good habits. Your life will almost start to improve by default. You want to send a message to the world that you love your life! When you get up enthusiastically each day, this is what you do. If you struggle to get out of bed, here are tips that can help you:

  • Have water by your bed ready to drink when you wake up. It should perk you up and stop you feeling fatigued.
  • Have your alarm clock away from your bed, preferably so you have to get up to turn it off.
  • Make your bed as soon as you get up so you’re not tempted to climb back in.
  • Brush your teeth to help wake yourself up. Do this before you eat anything.



Meditation is becoming more well known (I wrote a detailed blog about it!), and all kinds of people are using it. It isn’t just for hippies. Successful business men and women are now using meditation to improve their lives and minds! By taking just 5-10 minutes each day to sit comfortably in silence, you could experience many benefits. You can feel more alert, creative, and inspired. You could actually come up with answers to questions that have been plaguing your mind. Getting into this habit will benefit your life in many ways.

Get Some Exercise


Exercise isn’t just for people who want to lose weight. Exercising does not mean you have to spend hours bored-to-death running on the treadmill. By getting a little exercise before you start your day, you can feel so much more focused and prepared for what the day throws at you. Even if you just go for a short walk around the block, it should clear your mind and help you prepare to do your work or tackle the day’s projects. There are other benefits too, of course, such as weight and fat loss, muscle gain, improved health and fitness, and less chance of developing illness and disease.

Eat Healthy Foods


Healthy foods will help you to feel more energized. They’ll change the way you feel, act, and think. If you fill your diet with unhealthy foods, you will feel tired and sluggish. This isn’t to say you can’t have treats, but you should make moderation something you pride yourself on. You should also include things like fresh herbs and spices. Having between 2 and 2.5g of turmeric per day is said to be beneficial – and it tastes great.

Work On Your Self Development Each Day


Working on your self development each day will make you a better person. This is the kind of thing you need to do, whatever your goals may be. Make sure you read more self development books (I have a ton of suggestions!) – they will give you invaluable advice to help you through life. Go to classes and seminars, focusing on learning as much as you can. Get to the root of your problems and work them out. Control your emotions by learning where they’re coming from and learning to work with them. All of these things will make you a much better person!

Be Grateful


Make sure you’re grateful, even if you don’t feel like you have that much to be grateful for. The fact you’re alive is enough to be grateful for! Look around you. Be grateful for a roof over your head. Great friends and family. Money in the bank, even if it’s not much. The more you are grateful, the more you’ll find to be grateful for.

The Possibility of Having a Dream


I took photography as a hobby recently and discovered how much I love being outside, enjoying the peaceful mornings, nature, capturing moments forever…amongst other things. I realized that it’s beautiful sights like this one that make me feel so grateful and bring a smile to my face. (It’s the little things!) 

I’m reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and I came across this lovely quote:

“It is the possibility, of having a dream come true, that makes life interesting.”

So, what’s your dream? What do you hope to achieve someday? What would you do if money wasn’t a concern? (Or health?) How does your perfect day look like? What do you do on your free time that if you got paid for would be like heaven?

These are just some questions I find to be quite necessary for us to ask once in a while; to get a feeling of how we’re doing, if we need to change anything, how the life plan is going, etc.

Unfortunately not many people ask themselves these questions; so they live their lives almost in autopilot – study, work work work, marriage, kids, retirement, death. There’s nothing wrong with that scenario, if that’s what you want. But if you don’tchange your situation. Ask yourself these questions. Move little by little towards your goal, your dream life, your perfect day. Don’t let anyone tell you what you *should* be doing.

Do what makes you happy… because life is to be enjoyed. 

Sweet potato fries…a taste of heaven!

This has been a unique week; I am not only exploring and getting to know Australia’s rural side, I’m starting a new career (this beautiful project we call Yummy Habits!), I’m cooking more than ever before, I’m traveling from city to city every 5-7 days and dealing with surprises from time to time (having no cooking supplies, no stove/oven, a mini fridge that freezes your food, etc), and I’m also battling the traveling temptations that happen to all of us (you know, when the hunger strikes and you’re in a place you don’t know, with no mobile reception and only the equivalent of a seven-eleven to choose your food from). Regardless of the little obstacles that we may encounter sometimes, it’s always good to remember things aren’t as bad as they seem!


I’ve also had some lovely and exciting adventures exploring; like this one.

As they say, it’s the simple things in life that can bring the most bliss sometimes. I am now in a stereotypical house; with a full kitchen, oven, fridge, blender, stovetop, microwave, toaster…and I feel like I arrived to heaven. It’s truly the little things.

And now, back to those simple pleasures in life…sweet potato fries! They have easily become my favorite snack because they’re so easy to make and so delicious (who doesn’t like that?). I’ve been cooking them all week, multiple times per day; experimenting with different cuts, times, temperatures and spices. I read an infinite amount of recipes trying to find the perfect one but as we all know, perfection varies from person to person. I sometimes like my sweet potato fries very spicy! Would that be perfect for you? Maybe, maybe not. I want you to create your own version of perfect, hopefully with my guidance and support! 


This recipe is the result of a lot of sweet potato fries making people happy and I hope they do the same for you!

  • Quick tip: Portion-wise, I’d recommend 1-2 sweet potatoes per person depending on how hungry they are.
  • Quick tip 2: Don’t add sea salt until the sweet potato fries are done, this will prevent the salt from potentially drying the fries.image3-1


  • 2 large sweet potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons of Olive oil (you may use canola, grapeseed or melted coconut oil if you’d prefer)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of freshly ground pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground chili, cayenne pepper, paprika (it’s up to you! Any of these will do the trick to add some spiciness!)
  • 1/2 tablespoon of garlic powder 
  • 1/2 tablespoon of cumin


*Preheat oven to 450F or 230C (technically its 232.2 but that’s tough to set on some ovens so 230C can do).

*Wash, peel and cut your sweet potatoes. You may also leave the skin on for some added crunch.

*Cut them approximately 1/4 inch thick (this is very important!) it makes a significant difference how big/small they are – if too big they won’t fully cook, if too small they will burn.

*Combine: pepper, your choice of spiciness (chili, cayenne, paprika), garlic powder and cumin. (here you may notice I didn’t mention the salt – that’s important!). 

*Place cut sweet potatoes in a bowl and add the olive oil; sprinkle it all around and use your hands to get it all over the sweet potatoes.

*Add combination of spices (remember, not the salt!) to the sweet potatoes and use your hands again to get it all over them.

*Place sweet potato fries in a non-stick baking sheet for best results. Don’t overcrowd them, place them about 1/2 a centimeter apart.

*Leave them alone to bake for 10 minutes, then take them out and rotate them carefully (don’t burn yourself, I’ve done it too many times due to excitement).

*Place them in the oven for another 10 minutes.

*Take out and add sea salt now!
